Gwendolyn Brooks was the first black writer to receive the Pulitzer Prize, she was an amazing poet in 1950. She was born in topeka kansas in 1917. She wrote the poem called We Real Cool which we learned in school which i think has a valuable meaning to it. she specialized in writing poems such as we real cool because of her backround and the problems that black really had. Her parents had early recognized her talents and encouraged her to keep up the good work. By the age of 100 she had more than 100 poens in print and all her poems was about difficulty of blacks growing up.
